What is our parental leave policy?
We hold nothing on this.
No memo in Engineering or the stream mentions parental leave.
An honest nothing beats a plausible paragraph. Memo never answers beyond what it retrieved, and never fills a gap from a model's general knowledge.
01 — How it works
Capture is a by-product of work.
A memo exists because work happened, not because someone remembered to file it. Meetings, merged pull requests and Slack threads become memos on their own. Nobody is asked to keep a wiki.
Work happens. A memo exists.
Memo attaches to the tools your team already runs. A decision made in a meeting or a merged pull request is a memo before anyone thinks to write it down.
Kept in full, indexed for asking.
Every memo is stored exactly as it arrived and indexed for retrieval. The original is never thrown away in favour of a summary, so the record can always be re-read.
Ask. Get the memo.
Answers are drawn only from memos you are allowed to see, each one named and openable. Plain search is there too, for when you already know what you are looking for.
Every memo passes through three steps, with a hook at each one. Integrations are the only way in. We build the ones you ask for; you are never asked to build your own.
02 — Trust
Answers are bound to the memos they cite.
The person with the most questions is the person least able to check the answers. So an answer is never just a paragraph. It is the memos it came from, and the words drawn from them.

A first-class answer, not a failure state. Where nothing relevant is on record, Memo says so, and never swaps in something plausible.

Each answer lists the memos it was drawn from, with author and date, and you can open every one of them.
No claim without a memo behind it.
Nothing appears in an answer that cannot be traced to a cited memo. Fluent and uncited is a defect, not a feature.
Only what you may see.
You are never shown a citation to a memo you could not open, and never told that one exists.
03 — Asking
What you ask is yours alone.
Asking a colleague costs something. It says you were not in the room. Asking Memo costs nothing: your questions are visible to you and nobody else, and nobody is told that you asked.

Open by default. Closed when it matters. Nothing to administer.
A new stream is fully open. Create a team and its members can close a memo with one act, at creation. Closed memos are invisible to everyone else. The only thing anyone ever manages is who is in a team.
Everyone in the stream can ask about it.
The default for every memo, everywhere. Outside a team there is no other option: everything is open.
Only the team can ask. Nobody else knows it exists.
Marked closed by its author, once, when it is created. It never generates a request, an approval or a review for anyone.
The add button says exactly where a memo is going and who will see it. Press it to change either.
